Day 5: A Place I've Been

Oh, how I miss going places ;-;

I don't really have any pictures of places because I don't go out much apparently and live too much in the moment probably. I'm just going to be emo and share some pictures of the Mountain View Cemetery.

I love this place so much. Did you know it was designed by the same guy who designed Central Park in New York??

Here's some pictures of me, Shank, and our friend Amelia hanging around over there and taking a million pictures.

I took this one a couple years back, but if you take the hike up to the top of the cemetery around sunset, you get the most beautiful view of the whole park and you can see downtown Oakland AND San Francisco on the skyline.

This Land Is Your Landfill Review!!

Punk Rock! Socialism! Anarchy! Hating the Church! Hating cops! Sending a big ol’ “F*** YOU” to Mr. Donald Trump and our corrupt institution!

Do I have your attention yet?? If these words sent a thrilling cheer up your spine and made you shout “HELL YEAH!” then you will love The Homeless Gospel Choir and his new album This Land is Your Landfill.

The Homeless Gospel Choir is an amazing little punk band from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania that specializes in making the most radical protest songs you’ll ever have the pleasure of filling your earholes with. Since a couple of years ago, Derek Zanetti, founder of the band and one of the sweetest human beings I’ve ever had the honor of meeting, has moved on from being a solo acoustic act to joining forces with musicians Maura Weaver, Megan Schroer, Craig Luckman, and Matt Miller to create a full punk band! The band’s last album, Normal (also highly recommended, listen to songs Normal, Crazy, and Depression), was the first time we got to experience The Homeless Gospel Choir as a full band, and I thought that was just amazing to hear the band’s full potential played out like that.

But Normal was just a taste. This Land is Your Landfill, (released this last Friday, April 24th) makes Normal sound like the band were still working out the kinks. The chemistry and production in This Land is Your Landfill blew me out of the water, and is probably, in my opinion, the best Homeless Gospel Choir album to date.

First of all, Derek’s voice! You can really hear him pushing the limits in this album, really experimenting and playing with his vocal abilities (see about 2 minutes into Social Real Estate). The backing vocals, too, from (I think) Megan Shroer are amazing! I believe she did some vocals back on the album Normal as well (in Don’t Know?), but they didn’t stand out to me as much as they do here in TLIYLF (look at tracks You Never Know and Lest We Forget). And don’t get my started on the GUITAR!!! If you know anything about me, you’ll know that I am a slut for some good, hard-hitting, overwhelming guitar and, man, does This Land is Your Landfill provide (thanks Matt)! The new sound feels very Jeff Rosenstock-inspired, so if you enjoy his music I’m sure you will enjoy some Homeless Gospel choir as well :)

This is such a great album start to finish. I will admit that the last track “Punk as F***” was a little slower than expected from a title so great, but lines like “I won’t regret or shed a tear about how I don’t wanna go out,” and what sounds like a saxaphone solo and ska-styled horns, definitely make up for it.

This album is for the socially-anxious punk rock kids who need a light at the end of the tunnel right now because the world feels like it’s ending. The Homeless Gospel Choir has managed to make my heart swell and bring tears to my eyes every album he’s made, and this one is no different. I always thought the Holy Spirit was bullsh*t because I never felt it in church, but I’m pretty sure what I feel at Homeless Gospel Choir shows and in these albums is pretty damn close.

DANCE GAVIN DANCE AFTERBURNER ALBUM REVIEW

I’ve been a fan of Dance Gavin Dance since about 2014, drawn in by their complex guitar riffs and song structures. I love a band that can change genres and sound, but I also love a band that knows not to fix something when it ain’t broke. Dance Gavin Dance still sound like Dance Gavin Dance with their new album, Afterburner, that came out this Friday, April 24th.

The album starts out strong with Prisoner, pulling you in with lines like “Do you crave a greater reason to exist?” and then a chorus that hits you like a brick wall. It’s a very classic DGD sound and structure, especially with Jon Mess’s part at the end.

Although DGD keep their classic sound, they aren't afraid to expirement in Afterburner. As the album continues, we hear Tilian experimenting with the range of his vocals from keys to even screaming along with Mess. Track 3, Calentamiento Global, is a pleasant surprise, heavily Latinx inspired and something I never really expected from DGD. We then get some sounds in Track 4, Three Wishes, that seem like they were taken from Post Malone or Coldplay’s 2011 album Mylo Xyloto.

I will be honest, this album falls a little flat for me. It’s not as exciting and catchy to me as other DGD albums, there isn’t that same spark. I will say, though, that it’s not a horrible album. There are some treasures in there like Prisoner, A Strawberry’s Wake, and Nothing Shameful, where Andrew Wells from Eidola (a band you must check out as well, I recommend Tetelestai and Loti) shines beautifully against Tillian’s vocals. Dance Gavin Dance is a band that knows how to have fun and make great, what I’m going to call, Crow Music, where everything is shiny and you want to collect it all, even if you don’t have a real use for it later.

In conclusion, Afterburner is a pretty good album with some fun experimentations from the band. I’m excited to see what they do next :)

My Top 3 Songs:

Highlights:
X. "Do you crave a greater reason to exist?"
X. THE CHORUS
X. Jon Mess going ham at the end

Highlights:
X. another strawberry song!

X. chorus feels like a lil party :3
X. "I want you to matter to you! Forget those backstabbers!"
X. BASS SOLO
X. AND THE PARTY THAT COMES AFTER THAT
X. Jon Mess being a flight attendant in the music video

x

Highlights:
X. iNTRO
X. the chorus and the verses are just so fun
X. Andrew Wells' vocals
X. "What happened to my f***ing purpose?"
X. "Can you feel me calling your name from the balcony seats you left empty?"

Shank's alternative survey >:3

Shank's Survey for Alternative People ♥

▪︎what subculture/s are you a part of? (punk, goth, emo, scene, etc.)
- emo and punk!

▪︎when/how did you get involved in the community?
- in 2013 when Fall Out Boy got back together lol me and an xfriend used to carpool from school and light em up came on the radio and it was all downhill from there, now im an emo piece of sh*t. i think i've always been into the punk scene but never really fully understood what it meant until around late 2013/2014 when i started going to shows and getting into politics.

▪︎who are your favorite musicians?
- fall out boy and my chem lol, def more my chem recently but i'll always love old fob.

▪︎do you play any instruments?
- guitar and vocals :3

▪︎what piercings do you have/want?
- i have a phobia of needles that im getting over so i only have basic ear piercings and surpringly an eyebrow piercing, both i got at the end of last year. im contemplating lip piercings and eventually i'd like to gauge my ears i think.

▪︎what tattoos do you have/want?
- none, and i don't think i ever will. shank wants to get tatted w me tho so we'll see... there's this rat sitting on a toilet tattoo that i wanna get at funkytown in oakland lol

▪︎what colors have you dyed your hair?
- in order: red, rainbow, green, orange, blue, blue and pink, pink, black and red

▪︎what is your favorite article of clothing?
- okay i have a couple: my folie a duex shirt i found at the thrift store for like $5, my mcr sweater, and my punk jacket ive had since i was about 13 or 14 (haven't washed since then too owo so many smellz...)

▪︎are your family/friends a part of the community?
- most of my friends definitely are. my closest friends are. my family isn't really but i think they are at heart lol

▪︎what are some common stereotypes about your community that you disagree with?
- in the punk community i hate the stereotype that we are mean and only white. f*** that sh*t, punk rock is for everyone, and we're only mean if you're a d*ck.
For emos, i hate the "we hate women" thing. all the femicide stuff in some early emo is a little uhhhh but i dont think that defines us as a whole.

▪︎do you feel like you're part of a safe and inclusive community?
- im gonna steal shank's answer for this one cuz i agree: for the most part. there's always some gatekeeping, and there's bigots in every community.

▪︎do you feel accepted within your community?
- i feel like this is the same as the last question but yeah, for the most part. being emo especially has been the only thing that i feel i can fit into.

▪︎do you have any unpopular or controversial opinions about your community?
- stealing shank's answer again for punks: you can't be apolitical and still be punk. punk is a movement rooted in politics. also if you're racist, xenophobic, homophobic, transphobic, ableist, etc. you aren't punk. gtfo.
As for emos, idk if this is unpopular/controversial but i stand by the belief that emo has impacted the world's view on gender and sexuality greatly and that's something i love the most about the emo scene.

▪︎would you date someone who isn't a part of your community?
- honestly probably not. i'm way too invested in the emo/punk scenes and love music so much, it's so hard to me to interact with people for prolonged periods of time if they don't have that same interest.

▪︎what's your favorite thing about the community?
- as i said before, i love how emo has pushed the boundries of gender and sexuality. punk has done the same, and i love how passionate we are.

▪︎what's your least favorite thing about the community?
- apolitical/gatekeeping punks can suck my d*ck, seriously, what the hell are you doing.

▪︎is there anything else you want people to know about your subculture/s?
- true punks are political and also so f***ing nice, dont be too fooled by our outward apperances. also, let us emos be sad sometimes??? it's okay to feel emotions, that the whole message of the culture, man.

this survey was from my best friend shank!! friendproject.net/shank go follow her!! ♥

eggeggeggegg
Current mood:  distressed

i dont think i even fully want to be a boy, i want to be nothing. i know it's dumb and edgy but i want to be a ghost. i wish that i didn't have to have a body.

is this bigger than just being trans? i hate eating food now. everything about food makes me angry, i don't know why. i've never been one to make a big deal about food, i've never been one to finish a plate, but now i feel guitly when i eat. i want to throw up half way in, i get so anxious. f***, i miss my therapist.

anyways, so my mom doesn't understand what i'm going through, i don't think. it's hard to try to explain to her, i guess because i don't really understand it myself i feel like. i feel like my gender idenity is constantly changing too fast to try and explain to people in real time, especially to people who only understand a black and white definition of what being trans is supposed to look like and be.

one time i tried to come out to my mom she told me i couldn't be trans because i'm not going through the same distress as my trans cousin. "im your mother i know you so well i would know..." she tries to relate to me and says she knows what i'm going through. "oh yeah i wish i didn't have boobs or a period either!" yeah no sh*t, they're annoying as hell, but it's not the same. you're perfectly fine with who you are, you just feel inconvenienced.

i wish i could peel myself out of my skin.

not too knowledgable on dnd terminology y but

I Am A: Chaotic Good Human Sorcerer (2nd Level)

Ability Scores:

Strength-11

Dexterity-10

Constitution-10

Intelligence-15

Wisdom-15

Charisma-13

Alignment:

Chaotic Good A chaotic good character acts as his conscience directs him with little regard for what others expect of him. He makes his own way, but he's kind and benevolent. He believes in goodness and right but has little use for laws and regulations. He hates it when people try to intimidate others and tell them what to do. He follows his own moral compass, which, although good, may not agree with that of society. Chaotic good is the best alignment you can be because it combines a good heart with a free spirit. However, chaotic good can be a dangerous alignment when it disrupts the order of society and punishes those who do well for themselves.

Race:

Humans are the most adaptable of the common races. Short generations and a penchant for migration and conquest have made them physically diverse as well. Humans are often unorthodox in their dress, sporting unusual hairstyles, fanciful clothes, tattoos, and the like.

Class:

Sorcerers are arcane spellcasters who manipulate magic energy with imagination and talent rather than studious discipline. They have no books, no mentors, no theories just raw power that they direct at will. Sorcerers know fewer spells than wizards do and acquire them more slowly, but they can cast individual spells more often and have no need to prepare their incantations ahead of time. Also unlike wizards, sorcerers cannot specialize in a school of magic. Since sorcerers gain their powers without undergoing the years of rigorous study that wizards go through, they have more time to learn fighting skills and are proficient with simple weapons. Charisma is very important for sorcerers; the higher their value in this ability, the higher the spell level they can cast.
